Statement from Grandstreet Theatre
UPDATED STATEMENT- AUGUST 14th
We are releasing this follow up statement to provide some additional information.
Over the course of the summer, members of our cast have been subjected to repeated instances of verbal harassment and anti-Black racism. One such instance occurred following a performance, when an actor was directly confronted by an audience member with hurtful language as they were leaving the theatre. Additionally, earlier this summer a racial slur was yelled at members of our cast while they were walking downtown. This incident was immediately reported and responded to by Helena law enforcement. Out of respect for our actors and the production company we will not be providing additional specifics at this time.
Racist remarks to or about Grandstreet’s visiting artists are unacceptable, and we are disappointed that this is the experience of Helena for these actors who came to share their talents and time with the Capitol City this summer. Grandstreet will not tolerate discriminatory acts, including speech directed at actors, staff, and our theater community, and will timely report unacceptable discriminatory behavior to law enforcement.
ORIGINALLY POSTED ON MONDAY, AUGUST 12th
At Grandstreet Theatre, we believe in fostering an environment of inclusion, respect, and dignity for all individuals. We are deeply saddened and disappointed by the insensitive behavior exhibited by some members of our community towards our visiting actors who have come here to share their talents
This behavior does not reflect the values we uphold at Grandstreet Theatre or the spirit of our community. We stand firmly against all forms of racism, discrimination, and prejudice. The arts should be a unifying force, bringing people together across differences, not a platform for divisive or hurtful actions.
To the visiting actors and all those affected by these actions, we extend our heartfelt apologies. We are committed to taking steps to ensure that our theatre remains a safe and welcoming space for everyone, where diversity is celebrated and all individuals are treated with the respect and kindness they deserve.
We ask our community to join us in reflecting on how we can better support each other and stand against any behavior that undermines the values of empathy, equality, and inclusion.
Signed,
The Board of Directors & The Staff of Grandstreet Theatre
