NOW HIRING: Lighting and Sound Manager

Grandstreet Theatre is seeking a full-time Lighting & Sound Manager to join our team here in Helena, Montana. This role involves overseeing the creation of lighting and sound elements for Grandstreet’s productions, which include eight annual mainstage shows and various events. Responsibilities include serving as master electrician and sound engineer, designing lighting or sound for up to four shows annually, performing live sound mixing, maintaining technical equipment, and supporting educational programs. Collaboration with staff and volunteers, technical maintenance, and fostering a safe, supportive environment for students are also key aspects of the role. A passion for the performing arts and technical expertise is essential.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, at least two years of relevant production experience, and proficiency in various technical skills, including sound and lighting design, live sound mixing, and video projection. Additional expertise in scenic painting, prop building, carpentry, and networking systems is preferred. Physical demands include lifting up to 50 pounds and working at heights. JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Lighting & Sound Manager

Job Type: Full Time – Exempt

Location: Helena, Montana

Field: Technical Production

Salary: $38,000 – $42,000 (D.O.E.)

Role and Responsibilities:
The Lighting & Sound Manager is responsible for overseeing the creation of lighting and sound production. This position reports to the Technical Director. This includes:

1) Master electrician and sound engineer for all main stage productions plus up to 6 one night events including completing lighting hang and focus and audio support for all productions, and overseeing part-time staffing to accomplish this task;

2) Provide lighting and/or sound design for up to 4 shows annually;

3) As needed, performing live sound mixing, video projection, and special effects design support for productions and special events;

4) Creating a safe environment of educational support for our Theatre School students and volunteers;

5) Maintaining and improving the lighting, sound, and projection equipment and storage;

6) Supporting the Technical Director, Caretaker, and Managing Director in executing necessary maintenance and capital projects related to the lighting, sound, and technical equipment in the theatre;

7) As needed, provide technical support for staff and maintain the computer systems and networks of the theatre including installing, troubleshooting and configuring software and communication systems;

8) Other duties as assigned by the Technical Director.
Requirements: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience plus at least two years of relevant design, and theatre production experience. Good with kids and a moderate sense of humor.

Physical Demands:
Moving, carrying, and lifting overhead up to 50 pounds. Climbing and working off of ladders, and with heights. Strong audio and visual acuity.

Preferred experience (we would not expect that you would have all of these):
Audio production and live sound mixing; sound design; lighting design; master electrician experience; working knowledge of video editing and projection design; prop building, scenic painting, special effects experience; carpentry and rigging skills; knowledge of production software, computers, information systems and data networks; basic welding skills; experience with K-12 students. Mac and PC friendly; a strong working knowledge of networking systems and a dedication to customer service.
