Matilda was the first show at Grandstreet to be affected by the pandemic.  We were halfway through our rehearsal process in March of 2020.  Original cast members of Matilda have been given the option to return to their roles.  However, not everyone is able to continue with the show, so we will be holding auditions to fill the 15 roles listed below.

Seeking the Following Roles

Miss Agatha Trunchbull (Female or Male Playing Female, Adult: 20s – 60s) The tyrannical headmistress at Matilda’s school.  A villain of epic proportions who despises children, Miss Trunchbull was once a famous athlete and will be required to do some athletic “tricks”.

Miss Honey (Female, Adult: 20s – 50s) Matilda’s kindhearted teacher.  She is extremely timid and nervous around authority, but has the rare gift of being adored by every child in her classroom.  Warm and lovable.

Mr. Wormwood (Male, Adult: 20s – 60s) Matilda’s uncaring father.  A slimy, greedy used-car salesman.  A comedic character role, not necessarily a skilled singer.

Nigel, Eric, Tommy (Elementary or Early Middle School) Three of Matilda’s classmates, all unique and quirky in their own way.

Mrs. Phelps (Female, Adult: 30s – 70s) An eccentric librarian and friend of Matilda’s.  She is lovably excitable and strange, always on the edge of her seat when Matilda tells her stories.  This role could go to a non-singer.

6 Big Kid Ensemble Members (High School or Young Adult) A very active group of older students and various other characters within the musical.  Strong movers and singers.

Little Kid Swing / Understudy Will understudy a group of 8 Little Kids and will have at least 2 scheduled performances

About the Show

Broadway’s biggest little hero comes to life in a joyous girl power romp!  Matilda is a little girl with astonishing intelligence, wit and psychokinetic powers.  She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the lovable Miss Honey.  Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however – the school’s headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules.  But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, which just might be the school’s saving grace.  Inspired by the twisted genius or Roald Dahl, the Tony Award winning Matilda is a Broadway blockbuster that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life.  Matilda is the perfect Grandstreet Spring Musical and has roles for actors of all ages (you must be at least 11 years old to audition).  Matilda will be co-directed by Jeff Downing and Rosie Seitz Ayers.  Much more than “just a kids show”, Matilda surprised everyone with it’s multi-year run on Broadway (which included 5 Tony Awards).

Matilda Rehearsals

We understand that you are volunteering your time and we will do our best to accommodate your schedule.  Rehearsals are generally held Monday through Thursday evenings.  We sometimes add Sunday rehearsals when needed.  Participating in a Grandstreet show is a serious commitment and rehearsal attendance is very important.  However, rehearsal schedules have some flexibility depending on cast conflicts, holidays, vacations, and work schedules.  Please make sure to list all known conflicts on your audition form.  If cast in the show, rehearsal schedules will be created based on your conflict forms.  Actors will not be called to every rehearsal.  You will only be called to rehearsal when you are needed.

Tech Week

April 17, 2022 through April 21, 2022 / Tech week is the final week of the process where all of the technical elements of the show are put in place.  No actor may miss a rehearsal during tech week.
