Seeking the Following Roles

Matilda Wormwood (Female, Elementary or Early Middle School) An imaginative girl who is clever and
wise beyond her years. She has an intense thirst for learning that cannot be quenched.
Miss Agatha Trunchbull (Female or Male Playing Female, Adult: 20s – 60s) The tyrannical headmistress
at Matilda’s school. A villain of epic proportions who despises children, Miss Trunchbull was once a
famous athlete and will be required to do some athletic “tricks”.
Miss Honey (Female, Adult: 20s – 50s) Matilda’s kindhearted teacher. She is extremely timid and
nervous around authority, but has the rare gift of being adored by every child in her classroom. Warm
and lovable.
Mr. Wormwood (Male, Adult: 20s – 60s) Matilda’s uncaring father. A slimy, greedy used-car salesman. A
comedic character role, not necessarily a skilled singer.
Mrs. Wormwood (Female, Adult: 20s – 60s) Matilda’s self-absorbed, negligent mother and amateur
ballroom dancer.
Michael Wormwood (Male, Middle or High School) Matilda’s older brother. He is not very bright, and is
favored by his parents. Spoiled and lazy.

Lavender (Female, Elementary or Early Middle School) Matilda’s classmate and self-proclaimed best
friend.
Bruce (Male, Elementary or Early Middle School) Matilda’s classmate. His love of chocolate cake gets
him in trouble with Miss Trunchbull.
Nigel, Eric, Tommy (Male, Elementary or Early Middle School) Three of Matilda’s classmates, all unique
and quirky in their own way.
Amanda, Alice, Hortensia (Female, Elementary or Early Middle School) Three of Matilda’s classmates,
all unique and quirky in their own way.
Mrs. Phelps (Female, Adult: 30s – 70s) An eccentric librarian and friend of Matilda’s. She is lovably
excitable and strange, always on the edge of her seat when Matilda tells her stories. This role could go to
a non singer.
Big Kid Ensemble (Male and Female, High School or Young Adult) A very active group of older students
and various other characters within the musical. Strong movers and singers.
The Escapologist (Male, Adult: 20s – 50s) A circus performer in a story Matilda tells to Mrs. Phelps who
comes to life in their imagination. This actor may play other featured roles in the show.
The Acrobat (Female, Adult: 20s – 50s) A circus performer in a story Matilda tells to Mrs. Phelps who
comes to life in their imagination.
Rudolpho (Male, Adult: 20s – 50s) Mrs. Wormwood’s ballroom dance partner, ridiculously over the top,
flamboyant and cocky. This actor may play other featured roles in the show.
Doctor (Male, Adult; 20s – 50s) Mrs. Wormwood’s doctor when she goes into labor with Matilda. His love
of children is expressed in a campy fantasy number where he becomes his own pop star. This actor may
play other featured roles in the show.
Sergei (Male, Adult 20s – 60s) A Russian Gangster out for revenge with Mr. Wormwood after a shady
business dealing.

About the Show

Broadway’s biggest little hero comes to life in a joyous girl power romp! Matilda is a little girl with
astonishing intelligence, wit and psychokinetic powers. She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses
her schoolteacher, the lovable Miss Honey. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however
– the school’s headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and loves thinking up new punishments for
those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, which just
might be the school’s saving grace. Inspired by the twisted genius or Roald Dahl, the Tony Award winning
Matilda is a Broadway blockbuster that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination and
the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life. Matilda is the perfect Grandstreet Spring Musical
and has roles for actors of all ages (you must be at least 9 years old to audition).

Matilda will be codirected by Jeff Downing and Rosie Seitz Ayers, with Musical Direction by Gretchen Mundinger, and Stage Managed by John Harrington. Much more than “just a kids show”, Matilda surprised everyone with it’s multi-year run on Broadway (which included 5 Tony Awards). For more information, please email Jeff at [email protected].
